You are inching closer to your move. It’s happening. You are moving. Time to actually start packing. And we are here to have your back and drop some information about how to prepare for your move. What to pack how to pack and all the tricks and tips we can come up with so you can Ace this move.

But if you are not into other people packing for you, we have knowledge to drop:

Packing for a move is subject to some DOT as well as health department regulations. Those regulations are meant to protect you from damage. This is why we abide by them and we urge all our customers to follow suit.

Perhaps this is the time to tell you what NOT to move with a moving company. Moving companies are not allowed to move the following: Live animals and plants, liquids, perishable food, flammable chemicals and substances, firearms, and munition.

What we recommend not to send with us: There are items that there are no rules and regulations against shipping with a moving company but maybe it’s best you don’t. Long-distance moves can take a while to deliver. So that toothbrush, maybe don’t throw it in one of the boxes. Same goes for medicine that you are taking on a daily basis and other items you need to use on a daily basis. Also, those very personal items that are absolutely priceless. Do you really want us to ship your great grandpa’s irreplaceable black and white pictures from WWII? No insurance can ever cover that. Same goes for very valuable jewelry and family memorabilia. Stuff with emotional value. Sure, a mirror can break and there is insurance that takes care of that. But no insurance can cover a broken heart.

This out of the way, let's move on to the stuff that we do move and therefore needs to be packed accordingly.

• Fragile items: All fragile items need to be packed in two layers of bubble wrap and one layer of cardboard. So your table glass/marble tops your glass shelves and other fragile items need to be packed like this. When in doubt about an item, ask yourself this, what happens if I drop this item on the floor? If the answer is “it will break to bits” bubble wrap and cardboard are your friends. It’s also important to mark it fragile when you are done packing it. The word ‘fragile’ has a special place in the moving vernacular.
• Upholstered items: All upholstered items need to be wrapped in a plastic covering. So your mattress or your sofa and even that dining chair seat that is fabric coated all need to be wrapped in plastic. You really don’t want that mattress in a moving truck with no cover at all. For mattresses, you can get special mattress covers where ever you shop for moving supplies (more on that later). The same mattress covers can also be used for sofas (with the necessary adjustments - have a cutter and tape handy). Shrink wrap can be good to use for chair seats.
• TV’s pictures and mirrors: When you shop for moving materials make sure you check out the special boxes for flat-screen TV’s as well as mirrors and pictures that the market has to offer. They come in all sizes. You are sure to find the boxes that work for your items.
• Boxes: You will find that the market offers a variety of boxes that come in many sizes. The guiding principle should be that heavier things go in smaller boxes and lighter things go in bigger boxes. As long as you can pick the box up with your two hands and move around with it and the bottom doesn’t cave you are good.
• - The smallest standard moving box which is measured 12x12x18 and can carry 1.5 cf is very good for books, CD’s and heavier knickknacks.
• - The medium box, which measures 18x18x16 and can carry 3 cf, is a multi-purpose box. You can throw in pots and pans from the kitchen, toys, lightweight tools, and many other things. If it fits put it in.
• - The large box, measuring 18x18x24 and can carry 4.5 cf, is very good for linens and clothes. So go ahead and throw in those towels and sheets as well as T-shirts and jeans in there.
• - The extra large box, measuring 24x24x18 and can carry 6 cf, is very good for clothes and very light objects like throw pillows. There is another box the same size but comes reinforced and extra padded and is called a dish pack. It’s going to be perfect for fragile dishes (plates and glasses).
• - The final kind of box is the wardrobe box. This is a tall box with a rod installed in it. it‘s good to use for items of clothing that you would rather not fold. Nicely hung in a wardrobe box your designer coats, jackets, and that wedding dress you keep, are going to travel safely. All your shoes can go to the bottom of the box, as well as larger pillows that you have around the house.

Shopping for moving supplies:

You can find moving supplies at Home/Office Depot, Uhaul, and of course Amazon. So if you have amazon prime coupons discounts and benefits they are your friends.
You will need the various types of boxes mentioned above as well as tape, bubble wrap and shrink wrap. Most dealers do home delivery so it’s no problem to just do a purchase online in advance and when it gets delivered it’s a sign for you from the universe that it’s time to get serious about packing for your move.
